Description

M82 Galaxy

Distance from earth 11.5 million a.l.

The Cigar Galaxy (also known as M 82) is an active galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major; it is located about 12 million light years away and is associated with the larger and more famous M81. This is a great example of a starburst galaxy.
M82 experiences the gravitational effects of its neighboring galaxy, the larger M81; these tidal forces have been deforming M82 since about 100 million years ago. These interactions have caused a sharp increase in star formation phenomena.

A few hundred million years ago this galaxy had a close encounter with M81; as a result of this, a great deal of gas has poured into M82 and especially its core regions. The most recent encounter between these two galaxies took place about 250 million years ago and caused a sharp peak in star formation in both galaxies, as evidenced by the distribution and age of the open clusters of the two galaxies. Two other powerful starburst phenomena followed, the last of which occurred about 4-6 million years ago, causing the formation of stellar superclusters.
